The Grant Program increases the breadth and depth of the Institute’s work by supporting peacebuilding projects managed by non-profit organizations including educational institutions, research institutions, and civil society organizations.

In over twenty years of grantmaking, the Grant Program’s Annual Grant Competition and Priority Grant Competition have received nearly 10,000 applications and awarded almost 2,000 grants. The Institute has provided funding to grantees located in 46 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and in 81 foreign countries.

The Annual Grant Competition:

* supports innovative peacebuilding projects involving research, the identification of promising models and effective practices, the development of practitioner resources and tools, the development and delivery of education, training and dialogue programs, and the production of films, radio programs, and other media.
* funds projects focused on preventing, managing, and resolving violent conflict and promoting post-conflict peacebuilding in settings outside the borders of the U.S. Awards support activities that apply across a broad range of relevant disciplines, skills, and approaches. USIP welcomes proposals of an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary nature.

Topic areas of interest to USIP include, but are not limited to:

* Conflict analysis and prevention;
* Mediation and conflict resolution;
* Postconflict peace and stability operations;
* Religion and peacemaking;
* Women and girls in conflict and peacebuilding;
* Rule of law and transitional justice;

Annual Grant Competition facts:

* In March 2009, the USIP Board of Directors approved 24 annual grant competition awards from the October 2008 competition.
* USIP normally receives between 200 and 300 proposals annually and gives awards on average to 15 percent of the applicant pool.
* The awards generally range from $50,000 to $120,000.
* The deadline is October 1, 2009.

Eligible Grant Recipients

USIP may provide grant support to nonprofit organizations and individuals—both U.S. and foreign—including the following: institutions of post-secondary, community, and secondary education; public and private education, training or research institutions, and libraries.

American and foriegn individuals and nonprofit organizations may apply. Individuals whose proposals are funded will be required to identify a nonprofit organization to receive and manage the grant monies. When applicants are employed by an eligible institution, such as a college or university, USIP requires that grants be made to the institution rather than to the individual.

Support for degree work is not eligible in the Grant Program. Inquiries about support for dissertation research should be directed to USIP’s Jennings Randolph Peace Scholar Dissertation Program.

Only one application per competition may be submitted by the same project director.

Unsuccessful applicants of previous Grant Program competitions may not submit the same application unless it has been substantially revised.

USIP will not accept applications that list as participants, consultants, or project personnel members of USIP’s Board of Directors or staff. In addition, any application that lists USIP as a collaborator in the project will not be accepted.

Individuals who are currently working as USIP contractors may not be eligible to apply for grant support. To determine eligibility prior to submitting an application, please contact the Grant Program staff.

1000 REGISTRATIONS: 5 WINNERS

The winners of the second Vinyl 2010 Essay Competition, which has total prize monies of €11,000, have been announced, following the detailed deliberations of the two judging panels. The independent judging panel chaired by Nadine Gouzée, the Head of the Sustainable Development Taskforce for the Federal Planning Bureau for Belgium, was composed of representatives of the academic and NGO community and also included a representative of the UN Children and Youth Major Group. The industry judging panel was chaired by Ole Grøndahl Hansen, Director of Denmark’s PVC Information Council and was composed of eight industry representatives.

Earlier this year, participants aged 18-30 years from Europe and around the world were invited to submit 1,000 words in response to the following question: “Faced with a food and energy crisis, how can society improve its well-being”. Close to a 1000 people representing 89 nationalities had signed up to take part in the Essay Competition. Over 200 completed essays were finally submitted to the panel of judges.

Prizes have been awarded to the three top contestants from across Europe, in addition to the best global level entry. A special Industry prize has also been added to this year’s prizes.

This year’s winners for each prize category are as follows:

European Economic Area category:

First prize (€3,000) has been won by 28 year old Jon Elms, an MSc student studying Project and Enterprise Management. His key interests are sustainable development and organisational design. He is currently employed as a project manager in the construction industry and lives and works in London.

Second prize (€2,000) has been awarded to 30 year old British / Canadian Fiona Wright who works to actively support the growth and development of skills and competence in strategic sustainable development worldwide. She lives in Sweden and is currently teaching and coaching people in an overarching framework for strategic sustainable development.

Third prize (€1,000) has been awarded to 26 year old Robert McSweeney who is an environmental scientist for a consultancy firm in London and works predominantly on climate change impact and adaptation assessment. Global Category :

The Global prize (€3,000) winner is Christian Williams a 28 year old New Zealander who studied Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury and specialises in Highways and Transport Engineering. He is also interested in conservation and sustainability. The Industry prize (€2,000) has been awarded to 22 year old Wei Chao Zhou a student from Singapore at University College London currently pursuing a MSc degree in physics.

The winning essays, as well as the 35 runners-up, can be read on the competition website: www.vinyl2010essaycompetition.org . Visitors are encouraged to give their views and engage in dialogue with the other 200 authors. To date over 200 comments have been made. The 40 top essays will be published in a book that will be available shortly on the competition website. Some of the winners will be invited to speak at various high-level events focused on sustainable development.

The competition has exceeded the expectations of all the team at Vinyl 2010 considerably. Speaking as the independent Judging Panel meeting drew to a close and this year’s winners were announced, General Manager of Vinyl 2010, Jean-Pierre De Grève, commented: “The interest shown by so many contestants in this year’s competition is simply overwhelming. We are delighted to see the willingness of this age group to offer solutions to some of the biggest issues facing society today. This is the second such contest that Vinyl 2010 has organised and judging by participatory levels this year, we certainly see the value of continuing to offer young people a platform to air their view on this important subject in the future”

Chair of this year’s Judging Panel, Nadine Gouzée, said: “The Vinyl 2010 Essay Competition is a great forum for a vital and creative debate on how society needs to address these crucial issues. It is inspiring to see how engaged and enthusiastic the young people can be when discussing our future and the different kind of futures we need to consider. They offer the inspirational energy which we all need to see if we are to create the political will to truly develop a sustainable future.”

All resumes will be reviewed by the Western Union Human Resource department in order to determine the best match of skills and previous work experience in regards to this marketing internship opportunity. One (1) individual will be selected from the Entrant’s for a marketing internship role in Western Union’s Africa outbound marketing department, in the Montvale, New Jersey office. The selected intern will be offered a summer internship for a minimum period of 8 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks in the summer of 2009.

The Global Youth Assembly (GYA) 2009!!

The Global Youth Assembly (GYA) is an international program designed to connect Edmonton and Albertan youths with other youths across Canada as well as internationally through the Global Youth Assembly and other youth-led projects with local, regional, national and international focuses.

The Global Youth Assembly (GYA) is about bringing youth between the ages of 16-28 together from diverse geographical and personal backgrounds to learn from each other and become part of a movement to advance peace and human rights. The goal is to provide these youth delegates with a vibrant social forum where they can gain new knowledge and perspectives make new friends, create new goals and projects and the confidence and support they need to take action and ignite change in their communities.

REACH OUT, SPEAK UP! Ignite Change Now – Global Youth Assembly 2009 (GYA) will provide a vibrant social forum for 1000 Canadian and international youth between the ages of 16-28 to learn about and promote human rights and sustainable communities. The youth will come together for three days of world-class keynotes, interactive workshops, and breakouts that will focus on bridging diversity and strengthening youth capacity to become active members in their communities.

In 2009, delegates will explore the theme of ‘’building community”. We are all architects of our communities through decisions we make every day. How can YOUth be positive architects of their communities? We will be seeking workshops that explore this idea at the global and local levels.

The objectives of the 2009 GYA are:
• Promote diversity and inclusion
• Encourage youth expression through various media
• Educate youth by building awareness and developing knowledge
• Empower youth through skills training and creative workshops
• Support continued dialogue and youth action

Promote Diversi ty and Inclusion
Our priority is to offer the opportunity for youth from different backgrounds to come together and learn from each other.
Rarely do aboriginal and non-aboriginal youth, youth with and without disabilities, Canadian and international youth, High School and University youth, students and young professionals, high risk and low risk youth, and science and arts students have the chance be in the same room. The GYA invites all youth (16-28) to attend the GYA to focus on their similarities and common goals. The GYA itself builds a community of youth, a community that is diverse, hopeful, and engaged. All youth are welcome to be members of this community.

Encourage Youth Expression through Var ious Media
Reach Out, Speak Up! The GYA is designed to encourage youth to express themselves through music, dance, discourse,video, debate, poetry, art, writing, evaluation, etc. There are many ways for one to contribute to the collective youth voice.The GYA’s multi-media and celebratory nature helps youth feel comfortable contributing to the Assembly in a media of their choice and trying new forms of communication.

Educate Youth by Building Awareness and Developing Knowledge
The GYA 2009 is a three-day international “classroom” that uses creative methods to encourage all participants, including presenters and non-youth, to teach and learn from each other. The GYA complements formal education by going beyond the textbook. Youth may have heard about certain issues in their classes or through T.V. and Internet. The GYA gives them the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of human rights issues including extreme poverty, war, genocide, HIV/AIDS, the environment, universal primary education, cultural diversity, and social development through exposure to first-hand accounts from people around the world who are making a positive impact in these areas and in their communities. Examining these critical issues at various levels – the global, local, and individual – will expose the complexity and interrelatedness of these
issues.

The approach to building awareness and developing knowledge is thus threefold: 1) generate awareness about different issues and allow youth to explore those that interest them most, 2) draw parallels between different communities and different issues to highlight the interrelatedness of these communities and issues; 3) showcase positive community-based initiatives underway around the world.

Empower Youth through Skills Training and Creative Workshops
The GYA is unique because it goes beyond informative sessions to include hands-on workshops and skill development that allow youth to express themselves and participate in the Assembly in different ways. The GYA will offer a wide-range of workshops that use multi-media and creative approaches (art, film, simulation, scientific methods, music, dance, etc.) to ensure that youth leave the Assembly knowing that they possess the power, knowledge, talent, and skills to make positive change. Some youth might leave having learned that film is a powerful tool for change and how to use a camera; others might return to their communities having picked up tips on how to network, or with new found confidence, mentors, friends,and ideas about where to go for more information. Each youth will be empowered in different ways, which is why the GYA offers innovative and diverse approaches to participation using experienced facilitators.

Follow-up to the GYA 2009 is one of the major Specific Targets for GYA 2009 listed below. The John Humphrey Centre is dedicated to offering youth a way to continue the dialogue started at the GYA and a framework for implementing the action plans that they will create during the conference.

INTRODUCTION
The Office of Evaluation (EVAL) at the International Labour Office (ILO) is seeking Interns to work at ILO headquarters in GENEVA, Switzerland as Evaluation Research Assistants (ERA). EVAL is an independent evaluation office situated in the Management and Administration Sector which reports directly to the Director-General of the ILO. ERA internships are full-time, for a period of three to six months.
Description of Duties
ERAs will work with office staff on project, program evaluation, thematic and high-level evaluations. The office’s current year work plan includes thematic evaluation and research in migration and high-level independent country program evaluations of the ILO program in support of Zambia and Jordan. ERAs can also expect to work on other products produced by the office, such as the periodic evaluations of the Bank’s development programs with borrowing countries.

This is an opportunity to have first-hand experience assessing the public policies that shape equal access to decent work. It is also an opportunity to work with unique data sets, and to be involved with the most challenging labour and development issues facing ILO tripartite constituents.

Fluency in English and one of the other working languages of the ILO (French, Spanish or Arabic)
Competencies
Excellent writing skills (preferably in English)
Proven research skills (samples should be attached)
Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis
Knowledge of the use of quantitative, statistical techniques
Working knowledge of Excel, ACESS, Power Point
Familiarity with document production software

1.CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Africa Peace and Conflict Network (APCN) invites submissions for publication review. APCN publishes peer-reviewed research findings, policy analyses, and practitioner reflections, submitted by a diverse array of authors with a broad range of specializations and expertise in African conflicts and their resolution.

The following types of submissions are accepted:
1. Scholarly research papers like those published in refereed journals.

2. Briefings:
APCN’s Briefings provide a forum for innovative discussions not found in most scholarly journals. Briefings are one to twelve pages in length, and they may contain reports from practitioners, topical overviews, and other more open-ended discussions than is typical for research articles. Briefings may or may not contain citations and references. The key criteria are an accessible writing style and topical relevance. Submissions should provide valuable or thought-provoking information for persons interested or involved in peace and conflict in Africa. Practitioners or others lacking experience with academic publishing are especially encouraged to utilize this forum. See APCN’s current publications for examples. Instructors may find Briefings particularly useful for courses with less advanced students.

3. Multimedia Presentatiosn:
Thematically-relevant video and audio clips, photojournals, powerpoint presentations, and other multimedia pieces are also accepted. The material must have no copyright or other restrictions, unless usage permission is granted.

4. Book reviews:
APCN accepts analytical reviews of books on relevant topics. Reviews may be from 1-8 pages in length, and they should follow the APCN style guidelines.

Submissions will be peer-reviewed to ensure quality and suitability, and feedback will be provided. Submission should be formatted according to APCN’s guidelines, free of writing errors, have a good conceptual base, and draw on and present useful data. Some innovation in the work is preferred, such as the use of original data or the presentation of a novel analytical perspective. Anyone is welcome to submit.

II. GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
Papers must be well-written, concise, and thematically relevant.

Submissions should be in MS word (.doc) or rich text (.rtf) formatMultimedia presentations should be in widely used formats such as .ppt, .mp3, and .mpeg and should contain no copyrighted material without the appropriate citations and permissions.

Manuscript submissions must be formatted according to the Chicago style guidelines(http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/cmosfaq/tools.html).

Submissions must have a title page with the author’s names and institutional affiliation, and a 150 words or less biographical statement on each author

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
Authors are expected to adhere to normal standards for intellectual property rights , and authors assume full responsibility for the content of their papers.

APCN does not prohibit authors and contributors from publishing their work elsewhere.

The suggested citation format is:
Author name. Year of publication. “Paper title.” Occasional Paper (or Briefing) No. X of the Africa Peace and Conflict Network. M. Davidheiser (ed.). www.africaworkinggroup.org.

III. INTERNATIONAL EDITORIAL BOARD OPENINGS:
APCN is currently accepting nominations, including self-nominations, for its International Editorial Board. The primary work involved consists of peer-reviewing submissions
In addition, Board members should contribute to the growth and promotion of APCN and its activities and seek and solicit submissions of manuscripts and multimedia presentations.
